Powerball hasn’t seen a jackpot winner since Oct. 11, when a single ticket in California took home a $1.76 billion prize.
WASHINGTON — Someone could begin 2024 on a very high note by winning Powerball’s $810 million jackpot for the lottery’s drawing on New Year’s Day.
The jackpot surged to the sixth-largest in game history after nobody won the jackpot Saturday, although players in Colorado, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia all took home $1 million or more.
At the time of the drawing Monday, the jackpot rose to an even higher estimated $842 million.
The lottery game hasn’t seen a jackpot winner since Oct. 11, when a single ticket in California took home the $1.76 billion prize. The prize is currently the fourth Powerball jackpot to topple the half-a-billion dollar mark this year.

The streak without a jackpot winner is due to the game’s long odds, 1 in 292.2 million, that are designed to make winning rare so grand prizes can grow large.
Even with the smaller lump sum payout, federal taxes will eat into those winnings, and some states also tax big lottery prizes. Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
