The driver was taken to a hospital after the crash Monday morning at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.
BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A pickup truck driver smashed through a metal fence Monday at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport and hit two unoccupied planes before continuing across a grassy field and and hitting a guardrail.
The driver was the only person in the Ford F-150 and was taken to a hospital. No one else was injured, according to Karlyn Tilley with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The planes that were hit are privately owned, Tilley said.
“We’re seeing a large debris field,” Tilley said. “It’s just a lot of pieces scattered around. The truck did cause extensive damage to several planes, unfortunately.”
The crash did not appear to be malicious, she said. The cause was being investigated.
Colorado State Patrol took over the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration won’t be involved because this is a car crash, Tilley said.
