On Sunday night, police responded to the 9700 block of Washington Street for a report of a person with a gun, firing into the air.
THORNTON, Colo. — One person is injured after police returned fire during a standoff Sunday night in Thornton.
At about 7:54 p.m., police responded to the 9700 block of Washington Street for a report of a person firing a gun into the air, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found a male armed with a gun who pointed the gun at officers and barricaded himself inside of his vehicle, police said. The person was waving the gun around and pointing the gun at himself and officers, according to police.
While police were trying to negotiate with the armed person, he fired the gun from inside the vehicle, killing his dog, according to Thornton Police. A CodeRED notification was sent out to the community, police said.
Thornton officers continued to negotiate with the armed person for about 30 minutes while he remained inside his vehicle, according to police. A short time later, the person got out of the vehicle and fired at officers, police said.
Officers returned fire, hitting the armed person, according to police. The person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.
The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, police said. The officer who fired have been placed on administrative leave per department protocol, according to police. After the investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office.
