Organizers will call for the release of hostages still being held by Hamas and denounce acts of antisemitism seen in the weeks since the attack on Israel.
WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of people are expected to rally Tuesday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in support of Israel in its ongoing war against Hamas.
The war, now in its sixth week, was triggered by Hamas’ surprise attack into Israel, in which militants massacred hundreds of civilians and dragged some 240 hostages back to Gaza.
The “March for Israel” is organized by the Jewish Federations of North America. The organization expects to draw 40,000-60,000 participants on Tuesday to show solidarity and support for Israel and the Israeli people. Jewish Federations president and CEO Eric Fingerhut told WUSA9 the rally will have a particular focus on the more than 200 hostages still being held by Hamas since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
During Tuesday’s rally, organizers will also denounce rising acts of antisemitism seen in the weeks since the attack.
D.C. Homeland Security said one challenge with the event is rallies of this size are rarely during the work week. The National Guard will be on hand to assist D.C. Police with security.
Two weekends ago, tens of thousands packed downtown D.C. to rally in support of Palestinians and to call on President Biden to end aid to Israel.
Groups are expected to travel to Tuesday’s event in D.C. from across the country, including more than 1,000 people coming from Cleveland in 25 charter buses.
The rally is scheduled to be held on the National Mall from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. Gates for the event are set to open at 10 a.m., with a pre-event program at 11:30 a.m.
