Community Shield team news

Manchester United face rivals Manchester City on Saturday in the Community Shield at Wembley.

United manager Erik ten Hag will be delighted to welcome Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo back to the camp after their Euro 2024 final heartbreak with England against Spain

However, the Red Devils will be without Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro who both picked up long-term injuries, while Tyrell Malacia is not scheduled to be back until October.

City boss Pep Guardiola, though, would be without Ederson due to some “niggles” and Rico Lewis who was forced off during the Chelsea pre-season victory.

Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones are also likely to be unavailable and there will be no Julian Alvarez who is joining Atletico Madrid but Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne are set to return.

Man Utd escape PSR breach

Manchester United chiefs will avoid a financial rap after claiming £40million of Covid-related losses.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson had told talkSPORT only “relatively exceptional” allowances would prevent United breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

This was for the period that ended last season and Borson said their £40m Covid claim for 2021-22 was way bigger than their rivals.

He warned without that leeway, and being allowed to omit the £35m costs of Ineos’ deal to buy into the club, the Red Devils would break the £105m limit for losses over a three-year period.

But SunSport understands they were not the only club to claim big Covid losses, even after the pandemic ended, to avoid a PSR breach.

More on Old Trafford plans

Manchester United may be forced to scale back plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium due to a lack of government funding.

United chiefs recently made the decision to build a new, state of the art ground rather than redevelop Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are also looking to completely regenerate the area of Trafford where the ground will stand.

However, those plans may be put in jeopardy if the Manchester giants do not receive government funding.

According to City A.M., government money will be required to pull off the most ambitious of several proposals that are being put forward by the club.

But United are unlikely to get a handout following the recent discovery of a £20billion hole in the nation’s public finances.

Man Utd friendlies

Manchester United have played more far-flung friendlies than any European club in recent memory.

Football clubs have often been panned for flying halfway across the world to cash in on lucrative exhibitions over the summer.

United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are among those to have played in the USA during this close-season, while Tottenham have been to Japan and South Korea.

And according to new data from the renowned International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES), no club has played more friendlies outside of Europe between July 2010 and May 2024 than the Red Devils’ 52,

Neighbours Manchester City are next on the list with 45 – the same number as reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid.

League-wide, the Premier League set a new record in 2023-24 with an aggregate total of 42 ‘non-European’ friendlies played – cumulatively clocking up a whopping 191,514 miles in the process.

Ivan Toney advice

England legend John Barnes insists Brentford star Ivan Toney isn’t the answer to Manchester United’s issues.

Barnes told bonuscodebets.co.uk:

I don’t think signing a striker is the solution to the issues at Manchester United. I think it’s more of an issue for Arsenal who need a presence in the penalty area in terms of the way they play.

The problem with United is that [Andre] Onana is overworked which is to do with their shape when they haven’t got the ball. Having the energy and the willingness to work back. I don’t think United need a striker.

They’ve got [Rasmus] Hojlund who is young and has shown some promise last season. Toney is a good player but he won’t solve their issues.

Scott McTominay advice

Manchester United legend Gordon Strachan has urged Scott McTominay to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Strachan told topoffshorecasinos.com:

Scott is a hard-working, committed player. He’s been linked with an exit for the last few seasons, but his application and desire has never been found wanting. He has fought for his place at the club. There has been a lot of talk about his ability, and he was identified as a player that could be upgraded, but when Manchester United needed a big moment last season, he would often provide it.

If he’s enjoying what he’s doing at Man United, if he’s enjoying playing a squad role, then I think he should stay at the club. He’s one of the first names on the Scotland team sheet, so he doesn’t need to worry about his Manchester United game time affecting his international career.

If it was me, at this stage, I would want to go and play football every single week. I would want to go and prove that I’m a top player in the Premier League. He’s had some great times at Manchester United, and it’s a hard club to leave, but I think he should be playing week-in, week-out at his age.
