A man was taken to the hospital after he was shot by an officer in downtown Denver Saturday morning, police said.

DENVER — A man was injured in a shooting involving a Denver Police officer Saturday morning.

Police posted at 3:08 a.m. on social media that officers were investigating the shooting in the area of 19th and Market streets in the Lower Downtown area.

Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said during a news conference that several officers were managing crowds in the area when a person flagged an officer and reported a man with a gun near a vehicle in a nearby parking lot.

The officer approached the vehicle that matched the description and asked a man standing next to it to show his hands, Thomas said.

That’s when the man pulled out a gun in a threatening way, followed by the officer firing one gunshot that hit the man in an “upper extremity,” according to Thomas.

The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition but with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to police.

No officers were injured.

Thomas said there was another shooting that happened around the same time in the parking lot that is under investigation. He said officers are looking into the possibility that the man shot by officers exchanged gunfire with another person or people in the parking lot.

Thoams said there was evidence of a “volley of gunshots” in the parking lot in addition to the officer-involved shooting.

One person was injured in that shooting who transported themself in their vehicle to the 7/11 near the intersection of Downing and Lawrence streets.
