Man found guilty in fatal shooting in gas station car wash bay

DENVER — A man was found guilty Monday of fatally shooting another man inside a Denver car wash bay in March 2023. 

Uriel Rios-Avila, 32, was convicted Monday of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. 

David Trujillo, 52, was killed in the shooting just after 7:30 a.m. March 19, 2023 at the Sinclair gas station at Santa Fe Drive and Sixth Avenue. 

According to an arrest affidavit for Rios-Avila, video surveillance showed that the victim pulled his vehicle into a car wash bay. About 30 seconds later, a man rode a bicycle into the bay and immediately started shooting into the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver was killed, and another person in the vehicle had a gunshot wound to one of her fingers.

Rios-Avila was arrested about six hours later near Lipan Street and West 5th Avenue. The suspect had changed clothes and cut his hair to change his appearance, the affidavit said. He was hiding inside a hole under some train tracks when he was arrested, according to the affidavit.

A person who knows the victim and suspect said that they knew each other, the affidavit said.
