DENVER — A man faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman at their Denver apartment early Tuesday morning.
According to Denver Police, Tyler Nelson, 30, called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday to report a shooting at his residence in the 600 block of South Dayton Street in east Denver.
When police arrived, they found a woman on the floor of the main bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound, according to a probable cause (PC) statement for Nelson’s arrest from Denver Police. The document also indicates that a shotgun was seen leaning against an open closet with the muzzle facing upward.
Nelson agreed to speak with officers, but most of what he told them is redacted from the PC statement. The statement indicates that the victim’s wound did not appear to match up with how Nelson explained that she was shot. A preliminary examination of the scene also did not match his explanation of what happened, the PC statement says.
Detectives noted that Nelson never asked about the victim’s condition and didn’t appear to show any emotion about what happened. He did become upset when he was told the victim had died from her injuries, the affidavit says.
Police said they believe Nelson and the victim got into a verbal argument just before the shooting. Her name will be released at the later time by the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office.
