Zach Wilson worked with the No. 2 offense for a second consecutive day Thursday. Nix was superb with No. 3 offense.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Whether rookie Bo Nix begins the season as the Broncos’ No. 1 or 2 quarterback is still to be determined.
What is known is he’s overqualified for the No. 3 offense.
Nix did not throw an incompletion while operating the No. 3 offense on a hot Thursday morning before another berm-filled gathering at Broncos Park. One of his completions was an impressive off-foot, high-point throw to the back of the end zone where fellow rookie Devaughn Vele made a terrific leaping and reaching snag while tapping his toes for a touchdown.
“Right now, what I notice from Bo is he’s a good look-off guy,” said first-team safety P.J. Locke. “He’s really good looking off. Even in OTAs, I was like, ‘Man, I just cannot get a bead off him.’ Most of the time rookie quarterbacks, their first read, they’re going to look at it. Here, he’ll look you off real quick.
“I think he studies the safeties. He can tell—we’re super instinctive. We try to play games with him, so he tries to play games back. That’s what I’ve noticed off the rip. He can throw the pill. He can throw it.”
Broncos head coach Sean Payton had Jarrett Stidham run the first-string offense Thursday for the fourth time since training camp began. Stidham’s best throw a fastball to Tim Patrick in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown.
Wilson, who hasn’t operated with the No. 1 offense since last Friday, has been relegated to the No. 2 or 3 offense over the past five practices. He had the 2s for a second consecutive practice Thursday.
Nix has been the No. 1 quarterback three times in camp and with the new schedule should run with the top guys Friday.
“It’s not etched in stone,” Payton said. “It’s hard to rotate three through the first group. All three of them I thought had a good day today.”
Payton said Saturday would be a big day for the quarterbacks.
“It’s not going to be a scrimmage but it’s going to be three phases,” he said. “Special teams mixed in. Move the ball if you will (on offense in team periods). We haven’t met on that relative to reps and rotation.”
During the players’ off day Sunday. Payton said he and his staff would schedule out the QB rotation leading into their first preseason game, Sunday, Aug. 11 at Indianapolis.
While the starting quarterback job appears to be narrowed to Stidham and Nix, Nix and Stidham, it also appears Wilson is still alive in the competition for No. 2 QB — if the Broncos only keep two QBs on their 53-man roster.
Remember, the respective contracts favor Wilson as his base salary of $2.73 million is much lower than Stidham’s $6 million, while Wilson’s guarantee is higher at $2.73 million compared to Stihdam’s $1 million.
Given the Broncos must squeeze every dollar into their 53-man payroll given the $53 million in dead cap they are absorbing from Russell Wilson’s contract, Stidham entered the offseason QB competition needing to outplay Wilson to make the roster. That’s steadily been the case since the start of OTAs back in late-May
