Rolling Stone said “Jolene” is Dolly Parton’s pinnacle as a singer, songwriter and storyteller, which makes for “the ultimate country heartbreak song.”
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — Rolling Stone has crowned Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” as the greatest country song of all time Friday.
“Jolene is Dolly Parton’s pinnacle as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller: the ultimate country heartbreak song,” Rolling Stone said.
In 2014, Rolling Stone launched Rolling Stone Country and inaugurated the new site with a list of the 100 Greatest Country Songs. And to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the site, they’ve expanded the list to 200 songs.
They said in an article that what makes a country song is that it tells a story, it draws a line and “it has a twang you can feel down to the sole of your feet.” And with “Jolene,” Rolling Stone said after 50 years of its release it is more iconic than ever.
