A sheriff’s office spokesperson said the arrangement is expected to start in January.

MORRISON, Colo — The Town of Morrison will soon be turning over law enforcement duties to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

A spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday that the Morrison Police Department will be dissolved and the sheriff’s office will handle policing responsibilities full time. The arrangement is expected to take effect on Jan. 1.

It’s an extension of a current arrangement, the spokesperson said. The sheriff’s office has been handling nighttime law enforcement for Morrison since 2020.

The spokesperson said the contract is still being worked out. They hope to have a deal signed next week.

According to a news release from the Town of Morrison, the change is being made due to “various financial concerns” and the town is “working expeditiously to ensure a smooth transition.”

The sheriff’s office will not be absorbing any employees of the Morrison Police Department, according to the spokesperson, but they will be posting job openings that former Morrison officers and staff can apply for.

The police department has been without its leader for a month. Chief Bill Vinelli was placed on administrative leave on Nov. 4. A release from the town did not say why he was placed on leave.

In October, 9NEWS reported that Vinelli had hired Officer Richard Norton despite the fact that he was recommended for termination from his prior department for violating policies. When asked, the town manager said the investigation into Vinelli was unrelated to his decision to hire Norton.

Morrison’s population was 388 people as of 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
