Autumn begins Sept. 22. Plan your time off and get ready for your leaf-peeping road trips now.

BOULDER, Colo. — Autumn in Colorado means crisp hikes, warm apple cider, aspens quaking, leaves changing, women sporting their best Han Solo outfits, men donning So. Much. Flannel., hopeful Broncos fans swarming Mile High Stadium.

This year’s fall season, however, is being forecasted to be a bit over average in one area, and lower in another.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is calling for above-average temperatures and less precipitation over the next three months for Colorado.

In the colorful map provided by the 9NEWS Weather Impact Team, you’ll see eastern Colorado is orange, and all of central and western portions of the state are red.

Red represents a 60% to 70% chance for above-average temperatures. Orange means there’s a 50% to 60% chance.

What does that mean for the stunning fall colors of Colorado? Three main factors play into the leaves’ ideal transformation:

  • Previous winter’s snowpack: Last season’s snowpack was right at average for much of the state. That snowpack melted quickly though.
  • Cool summer temps: This summer’s temperatures have been above average for the most part, at least along the Front Range.
  • A sunny September: Except for the past week to 10 days as monsoonal moisture has moved through, it’s been a mostly sunny August. We obviously haven’t gotten to September yet.

Hey look, it’s the map showing average dates for peak aspen colors:

So break out your flannels, vests and boots, pick up your pumpkin spice latte, and plan your route.

As always, when you’re out traversing mountain passes and peeping those leaves, please submit your photos and videos through Near Me in the 9NEWS app. We on the digital team do like seeing your photos so we can plan our own trips.
