According to city officials, a permit was approved and issued on June 4, which means contractors can start demolition work right away.
DENVER — Nearly a year since a fourplex exploded at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Virginia Avenue, crews are preparing to demolish the property.
The site has remained much the same since the building exploded with several people inside on Aug. 10, 2023, injuring one person and killing a dog. The only difference is a tarp placed on the right side of the building, plus a large crane in the back to remove half of what was left of the second floor.
According to city officials, a permit was approved and issued on June 4, which means contractors can start demolition work right away. In the permit approval, ASR Companies is listed as the contractor that would complete the demolition.
Last year, city officials told 9NEWS there was an inspection that happened in November, and the city tried to make contact with the owner to determine a plan of action, but the owner wasn’t as responsive as the city hoped.
Earlier this year, city officials said the property owner hired a demolition contractor and submitted a demolition permit application.

“The city is reviewing that application for completeness and will issue the permit was everything is in order,” Dennis Shults, deputy building official, told 9NEWS in February. “There’s a number of different agencies that are required to sign off. Some of those agencies include public works, DOTI, wastewater, landmark and forestry, but there’s also outside agencies like Denver Water and the state. Once all of those agencies approve, then we can issue the permit.”
9NEWS reached out to ASR Companies to find out the exact timeline on when the lot would be empty, but we have not received a response.
The Denver Fire Department said a natural gas explosion is the suspected cause of the blast.
