Because of unsafe conditions, firefighters cannot enter the building to put the fire out, Mountain View Fire Rescue said.
LONGMONT, Colo. — Mountain View Fire Rescue said crews are working a fire at an abandoned sugar mill in Longmont.
The department said Sunday morning that crews responded overnight to reports of flames coming from inside the sugar mill, located in the 11800 block of Sugar Mill Road, which has been vacated for decades.
Crews found the fire concentrated around wood materials that had been stored in a machine shed for years. They were able to use a tower truck to get water on the flames, but due to hazardous conditions inside the building crews were not able to enter.
Due to the safety concerns, the fire will be allowed to burn out, the department said. As of Monday, the department said the fire was still burning and would continue to until the materials inside were gone.
Residents may see smoke coming from the area and are advised to keep their windows closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the department said investigators may not be able to get inside to determine the cause after its out due to the safety concerns with the building.
Longmont Fire, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Longmont Police, Lafayette Fire, and Boulder Rural Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.
The city had been making efforts to redevelop the area. Plans shown last August included a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail and a performing arts center among 1,638 multi-family housing units and 600 townhomes.
