Drop-off locations for tree limbs, debris around Denver metro

COLORADO, USA — The powerful winds from the weekend storms that cut off power to thousands in the Denver metro also left behind a mess of broken tree limbs and debris for homeowners to clean up. 

Some cities around the metro have opened drop-off locations for residents to drop off the limbs and debris left in their yards. Others are allowing residents to dump the limbs and debris into their regular trash pickup.

For downed tree limb issues, contact Ask Arvada. Residents need to call a local tree contractor to remove limbs from private property. 

Tree limb disposal resources

• All Arvada residents have access to the bulky item drop-off on June 8. Branches are accepted when bundled appropriately. 
• If residents subscribe to the city’s waste hauling program, they can call Republic Services at 720-898-7575 and request bulky item pickup for an additional cost. 

Residents with trees on their property that don’t belong to the city, can call an arborist or landscaper to clean up fallen branches. The Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site Landfill at 3500 S. Gun Club Road in Aurora takes tree debris from residents.

City staff take care of public trees and debris, turning it into mulch, which is used for city projects or given away to residents.

Downed trees and branches

• If emergency removal of a fallen tree or tree branch is needed to clear a street, call 311 to report the specific address. The city will evaluate and prioritize the removal of the obstruction, and when necessary, the city will remove the encumbrance, and the cost of the work will be billed to the responsible property owner.
• Property owners are responsible for pruning and cleaning up debris from trees located on private property and within the public right of way adjacent to their property. DO NOT relocate branches to parkways or other public areas.
• Residents can visit denvergov.org/forestry for a list of licensed and insured tree care contractors.

Disposal of tree branches

• There are no specific tree limb or debris drop-off locations in the city of Denver. 
• Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure collects a limited number of branches as part of its regular extra trash collection service to residents.
• Branches must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter, and they must be cut into lengths of 4 feet or less, bundled and tied, and weigh no more than 50 pounds.
• Customers may set out up to 10 bundles of branches on their large item pickup day.

Douglas County’s two slash/much sites are open on Saturdays until Oct. 26. 

One site is located at 7828 S. Colo. 67, about two and a half miles north of Deckers. The other is at 1400 Caprice Drive in Castle Rock.

The city opened a tree drop-off site at the city greenhouse at 9556 W. Yale Ave. The site will be open until April 15. Lakewood said this site is for storm damage only and people must be able to unload the tree limbs without assistance. 

The City of Lakewood forestry team has been working hard to clear fallen trees from city streets. Report fallen trees blocking streets by calling the Lakewood police non-emergency line at 303-980-7300. Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation is hosting a free branch drop-off for residents (proof of residency required) on April 12 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Anderson Park in the northeast lot at 4355 Field St.
