The crash happened around 3 a.m. New Year’s Day on Tower Road, police said.
DENVER — A Denver sheriff’s deputy is facing charges after he allegedly crashed a car, left the scene, and then reported it stolen the next day, the Aurora Police Department said.
Aurora police said Jeremiah Espinoza-Young, 30, is charged in connection with a crash around 3 a.m. Jan. 1 in the 1900-block of Tower Road in Aurora. A driver hit a large metal fence pole and concrete barrier — causing about $15,000 in damages — and left the scene, police said.
Police said the driver was later identified as Espinoza-Young. He filed a stolen vehicle report with Denver police later that morning, Aurora police said.
“Through the investigation, it was learned that Jeremiah lied about his car being stolen and that he was the driver who left the scene,” an Aurora police spokesperson said.
The Denver Sheriff Department said Espinoza-Young was arrested on charges of attempting to influence a public servant, false reporting to authorities, leaving the scene after striking unattended property and careless driving.
The department said Espinoza-Young became a deputy sheriff in 2016 and is assigned to the Denver County Jail. The department placed him on investigatory leave on Jan. 3, the sheriff’s department said.
