The shooting happened Thursday afternoon in the area of East 47th Avenue and York Street.

DENVER — The Denver Police Department said officers shot and injured a man Thursday afternoon in the area of East 47th Avenue and York Street after responding to reports of someone threatening people with a handgun.

After the shooting, investigators found that the man had an Airsoft pistol that looked like a semiautomatic handgun, said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas.

The man was taken to a hospital. He was in critical condition and expected to survive, Thomas said. No other injuries were reported, police said.

About 2:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of East 45th Avenue and St. Paul Street on a report of a person with a gun who was threatening people.

About 20 minutes later, officers contacted the man near 47th and York. The man refused commands to stop and show his hands, and he pulled what looked like a pistol from a bag, Thomas said.

Multiple officers fired their weapons at the man. They then applied a tourniquet and rendered first aid until an ambulance arrived, Thomas said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The man could face charges for felony menacing, Thomas said.

About the same time, Denver Police also responded to a shooting in the area of 38th and Walnut streets. A Denver Police spokesperson said the two shootings were not related. One person was taken to a hospital, and their condition wasn’t known, police said.
