There were two Democrats running in the primary election to be Denver district attorney. No Republican made the ballot.
DENVER — John Walsh is leading the race to be Denver’s next district attorney. His only opponent, Leora Joseph, conceded Tuesday night.
Walsh will get the job. That’s because not a single Republican made the primary ballot.
Walsh will become the 2nd Judicial District’s chief law enforcement officer, in charge of the team of lawyers who prosecute, or decide not to prosecute, the city’s biggest crimes.
With no GOP candidate, only registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters were able to vote in the primary. They chose between the Colorado attorney general’s former chief of staff Leora Joseph and attorney John Walsh.

According to his campaign website, Walsh has won cases against big banks, Wall Street and major pharmaceutical companies. He worked on former President Barack Obama’s clemency project, furthering sentencing reforms for nonviolent drug sentences, and he also represented the Biden campaign fighting cases in 2020 that challenged the presidential election results.
Joseph served as chief of staff to the state’s attorney general, where she focused on policing and transforming the connection between the justice system and the mental health system. She worked for long periods in the offices of the district attorneys in Boston and in Arapahoe County, and a shorter stint in the Denver District Attorney’s Office. She currently works for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, leading the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health.
