Denver businesses have applied for homeless encampment aid

The list of applicants includes established local venues such as Mercury Cafe and Snooze.

DENVER — Over 300 Denver businesses are hoping to get thousands in federal grant dollars to help with the negative financial impacts of homeless encampments.

Bars and breweries, cafes, a few small concert venues, hair studios, a yoga studio and auto shops are among those seeking one-time infusions of $7,500 or $15,000, depending on annual gross revenue, for aid after encampments located within two blocks of their business.

After applications closed Dec. 14, 2023, a total of 313 applications were received, said Shelby Morse, a spokesperson for Denver Economic Development and Opportunity (DEDO).

The list of applicants includes established local venues like Ophelia’s Electric Soap Box, Dazzle, Mercury Cafe and Lost Lake Lounge. Breweries include Cerebral, Strange and Woods Boss Brewing. Bars and pubs such as The Fainting Goat Pub, The Hornet and Middleman and chain restaurants such as Subway, Quiznos and Coldstone Creamery also applied.
