Colorado Parks and Wildlife is warning about the use of rat traps after a doe was spotted with one latched onto her mouth.

EVERGREEN, Colo. — Think you’re only catching rats when you set outdoor traps?

Colorado wildlife officers rescued a deer from a rat trap in the mountains west of Denver.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said the doe was spotted for several days in Evergreen with a rat trap device on her mouth.

CPW officers were able to catch the deer to sedate her and remove the trap. It took a while for the deer to regain strength, but officers stayed with her until she was able to run off on her own.

Officers said the bigger issue is that the deer was likely being fed by humans, which is illegal and harmful to animals.

“The doe was comfortable approaching people while wearing the trap. That’s a bad sign,” CPW said. “Remember to never feed wildlife, intentionally or on accident.”
