La Junta Fire and the Otero County Sheriff’s Office were searching the Arkansas River on Wednesday. It was unknown how many people were still missing.
OTERO COUNTY, Colo. — The Otero County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies were conducting a water rescue Wednesday morning in the Arkansas River near La Junta.
The sheriff’s office posted about the search before 7 a.m. on the social platform X. The original post was for a male who had gone into the river. In an update at 7:23 a.m., the sheriff’s office said it was unknown how many people were still missing.
The La Junta Fire Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were assisting in the search.
People were asked to avoid the Arkansas River in the North La Junta area, the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.
Sheriff Shawn Mobley reminded residents that the river runs high this time of year and is much faster than it appears. He asked the public to stay out of the river for everyone’s safety.
Earlier in the morning, La Junta Fire rescued another person from the river in an unrelated call, the sheriff’s office said.
