The fish was sold at Costco locations under the warehouse chain’s Kirkland Signature brand.
WASHINGTON — A brand of smoked salmon sold at Costco stores across the country is being recalled over concerns that some of the fish may be contaminated with listeria.
Acme Smoked Fish Corp. issued the voluntary recall Tuesday for certain packages of smoked salmon sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand.
In a letter to customers, the fish producer said the recall includes packages of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with lot number 8512801270. The fish was sold between Oct. 9 and Oct. 13.
The lot number can be found on the upper right side of the salmon’s package, near where the clear plastic window meets the black border of the packaging.
Customers who have purchased salmon affected by the recall are being urged not to eat it, and to instead return any affected products to Costco for a full refund.
Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections. Symptoms include fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
It’s unclear how the bacteria was discovered in this case. Meat and fish products are regularly tested by U.S. regulators for potential contamination.
Acme Smoked Fish did not say how many of the affected products were sold, or where in the U.S.
The company also advised consumers to call 718-383-8585 with any questions or concerns.
The recall comes after a nationwide recall of a number of ready-to-eat meals and other meat-based products over listeria concerns. Those products were sold at Costco stores as well as Aldi, Walmart, Target, Giant Eagle, HEB, Trader Joe’s and Kroger locations.
