It’s still winter in Colorado’s mountains. Heavy snow is possible at times Monday night. Fire danger increases Monday in eastern Colorado.
DENVER — Colorado’s weather forecast calls for heavy snow and increased fire danger in different areas of the state early this week.
Snow will develop late Monday in the mountains of western Colorado, while the eastern plains will see increasing fire danger with strong winds throughout Monday.
Western Colorado heavy snow
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory for portions of the mountains in western Colorado.
Significant snow accumulation is possible in most central and northern mountain areas, along with considerable blowing and drifting snow above timberline. As much as 18 inches of snow could fall in the higher elevations by Tuesday afternoon.
9NEWS meteorologist Chris Bianchi said if you’re traveling through Colorado’s mountains, especially along and north of Highway 50, try and get that drive done earlier rather than later Monday. It could be a rough ride in the high country, especially at or above pass level, after dark Monday night.

Eastern Colorado fire danger
A Red Flag Warning has been issued in eastern Colorado from noon to 10 p.m. Monday.
Winds will increase with gusts 30 to 45 mph and low relative humidity. Rapid fire spread is possible in such conditions.

Denver rain showers
In Denver, rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder move in late Monday night and early Tuesday. The system will be accompanied by some stronger winds.
Look for a dreary start to Tuesday in the Denver metro area. The majority of the rain should clear out by noon Tuesday, but it’ll stay mainly cloudy through the day.
Skies clear for Wednesday, but this week generally looks unsettled. Bianchi said Denver will likely get some more rain Thursday and Friday, and there’s a chance that some of that could mix with snow for lower elevations, including Denver.
As always, stay tuned to 9NEWS for the latest weather forecast as we update the track of this spring storm system.
