Colorado traffic: Eastbound lanes of I-70 closed near Byers

Drivers need to exit Interstate 70 in Byers and take Highway 40 east to Peoria Road to get around the closure, CDOT said.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — Drivers headed to Colorado’s eastern plains on Interstate 70 in Arapahoe County are going to be met with a literal roadblock after a semi and an SUV crashed into one another and caught fire.

The eastbound closure spans from Byers on the west to Deer Trail on the east.

Drivers headed east will need to exit I-70 in Byers and get on Highway 40 to get around the closure. They can then get back onto the interstate in Deer Trail, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said all of the people inside the SUV were taken to a hospital. There’s no word on their conditions. Officials did not immediately release the status of the semi truck driver.

Colorado State Patrol is handling the investigation into what lead up to the fiery crash. The sheriff’s office did not say how long the closure was expected to last.
