The Republican U.S. Representative from Colorado is bucking his party, saying Mayorkas’s handling of the border “is not an impeachable offense.”
DENVER — Colorado Republican Representative Ken Buck is the first Republican to commit to bucking his party’s move to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Buck told MSNBC Thursday he’s a “solid” no on a resolution to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border crisis.
That’s a reversal from his position a few years ago when Buck implied Mayorkas had committed treason over his handling of that same issue.
Buck said the Republican party doesn’t have the grounds to make a case for impeachment.
“Well, this is not a high crime or misdemeanor. It’s not an impeachable offense. This is a policy difference,” Buck told MSNBC.
Buck warned against setting a precedent for impeaching cabinet officials and said it could come back to bite the next Republican president.
“Let me from the outset say there is a crisis on the border,” Buck said. “The law needs to be enforced, but if we start going down this path of impeachment with a cabinet official, we are opening a door as Republicans that we don’t want to open.”
Republicans said Mayorkas is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors as well as “breaching the public trust” for not stopping record crossings at the southern border.
Republican leaders can afford to lose only a handful of Republican votes in the GOP’s narrow majority.
Buck is not running for reelection in 2024 to Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who currently represents the state’s 3rd Congressional District, recently switched to run for Buck’s seat.
