Christopher Case’s family believes he was about 28 years old when he died. “My only fear is we aren’t going to find out what happened exactly,” his brother said.
WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Weld County investigators have identified a man found in a field 24 years ago.
Christopher Case’s body was found just east of Greeley in 2000. His family believes he was about 28 years old when he died.
“I just don’t know how to describe it anymore. He was family,” Richard Case, Christopher Case’s brother, said in reaction to the news. “It just shocked me that it all came down after my mom and dad were both gone.”
The body now identified as Christopher Case’s was found near East Eighth Street and Weld County Road 43 on Feb. 14, 2000. No identification was found, so authorities listed him as a John Doe — until recently.

“They retested DNA and my mom popped, and since my mom was already gone, they called me because my dad had gone as well,” Case said.
Case, who lives in Nevada, said he hadn’t seen his brother since 1998. He said Christopher Case had a drinking problem and often stayed away, but never for this long.
“We kind of speculated where he was found he was headed down to my grandfather’s funeral, and I remember what my dad told me, Chris was never there, so,” Case said. “My only fear is we aren’t going to find out what happened exactly.”

Investigators used genetic genealogy testing to crack this case.
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office said there was no indication of trauma, and a cause of death was never determined due to the advanced state of decomposition.
Case now has his brother’s ashes, but he does not have peace of mind. While life has gone on, he wants to know why his brother’s didn’t.
“I’d like to know more of what happened,” he said. “Even through our rough times, he was family. He stuck up for me in a lot of things. It’s not right with him not being here.”
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office told 9NEWS they’re not currently investigating the circumstances of Case’s death, but if new information becomes available, that could change. Richard Case is encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
