Jim Goddard has hundreds of pins, along with Olympic torches and other memorabilia.
DENVER — Pin trading is one of the biggest events outside of the actual competition at an Olympic Games, and in Paris, there’s a Colorado man who has one of the biggest collections of Olympic pins and memorabilia you’ll ever see.
Jim Goddard, an Olympic historian and collector, has been to nine Olympics. Over the years, he has compiled an impressive collection of Olympic memorabilia and history. Inside his Denver home, he doesn’t have just a few Olympic pins – he has hundreds, maybe thousands.
“Pin collecting is sort of a gateway into collecting all kinds of memorabilia from the modern Olympic Games,” he said.
He has old pins, new pins, odd pins and even pins from the 1976 Denver Olympics that never happened.
“There were a number of different pins created for Denver, but that’s another story,” he said.
There are press passes from the Olympic games, including one from the 1960 Rome Games. And he has a couple of Olympic torches. It’s an Olympic museum stored in Goddard’s house.
“I don’t think I would call it a museum,” he said with a laugh. “I would call it a display of my disease.”
The collection is worth thousands of dollars, or maybe more. And while you would think his most valuable piece in this impressive collection is the 9NEWS Tokyo Olympics pins, it’s actually a 76-year-old piece that’s a little more substance.
“Probably the pièce de resistance would be a 1948 London torch,” he said.
Now Goddard is looking to add to his Olympic acquisitions by heading to Paris.
“It’s always fun to reconnect with other collectors that I know around the world, and so in Paris, I will have lots of meetings and try to find places where we can trade,” he said.
It’s a passion that Goddard said goes beyond just collecting pins and is more about preserving Olympic history.
