Briscoe will replace 2017 Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr., who announced he will retire at the end of the season.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Chase Briscoe will replace Martin Truex Jr. at Joe Gibbs Racing starting in 2025, the team announced on Tuesday.

Briscoe, the 2021 Cup Series rookie of the year, signed a multi-year contract to replace Truex in the No. 19 Toyota. Truex announced he would retire from full-time competition at the end of the 2024 season. Sponsor Bass Pro Shops will remain with the team to back Briscoe.

News of Briscoe’s move to Gibbs was spoiled by Christopher Bell, who mistakenly jumped the gun during a news conference at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this past weekend. Briscoe, for his part, said nothing was official yet. Briscoe currently sits 16th in the Cup Series standings, 25 points below the cutoff position held by Joey Logano.

“I’m excited for this opportunity with Joe Gibbs Racing and Bass Pro Shops,” Briscoe said. “From a competition standpoint, JGR is the place to be if you want to go win races week in and week out and to race for the championship every year. I am blessed that Johnny Morris and Bass Pro are on board to help us carry on the legacy of the 19 car. For me personally, being an avid outdoorsman, there’s a lot of pride in now being a part of the Bass Pro brand and I’m extremely grateful for this partnership. Getting to meet Johnny, I feel like I share a lot of the same values as him and Coach, and I’m ready to get to work and prove that they have made a great choice putting me in this car.”

Briscoe’s future was uncertain when Stewart-Haas Racing, the team he’d driven for since entering the Cup Series, announced it would close at the end of the season. As of Tuesday, Briscoe is the only SHR driver with a publicly known future in Cup. Teammates Josh Berry, Noah Gragson and Ryan Preece have all said they’re still looking at their options for 2025.
