After a tight race in the 2024 election, Trump has been re-elected and will be the first president in more than a century to serve two nonconsecutive terms.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Donald Trump cannot run for president again in 2028 after winning this year’s election and becoming the 47th President of the United States.

After a tight race in the 2024 election, Trump has been reelected. So why can’t he run for president again in 2028 and serve two consecutive terms?

The answer: the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Presidents are permitted to serve two total terms, or eight years.

The 22nd Amendment reads in part:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once.”

Since Trump won and served from 2016 through 2020, and now will serve a second term that runs from 2024 through 2028, he will have fulfilled his allowed time.

With this win, Trump is the first president in more than a century to serve two nonconsecutive terms.

How old will Trump be at the end of his second presidency?

By the time his second term will be up, Trump would be 82 — a year older than President Joe Biden is now. Biden bowed out of the race in July following his disastrous debate performance and months of being hammered by Trump and other conservatives as being too old and erratic for the job.

President-elect Trump will be inaugurated in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20, after the election is certified on Jan. 6. Harris will oversee that proceeding just like Vice President Mike Pence did in 2021 after he and Trump lost the 2020 election.
