In September 2022, John Ramos called 911 to report that he shot his wife inside their Broomfield apartment.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A Broomfield man will spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering his wife.

After his jury trial, 30-year-old John Ramos was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced in a release Wednesday.

On Sept. 25, 2022, Ramos called 911 to report that he had shot his wife, later identified as 35-year-old Tegan Leslie, inside their Ridge Parkway-area apartment in Broomfield, the release said. Broomfield Police officers later arrested Ramos, who was charged with first-degree murder the following week.

According to the release, Ramos shot Leslie three times, once in the forehead and twice in the neck, while she was making dinner.

Initially, Ramos claimed that his wife had been abusive to him and that he was defending himself, according to the release. Following his arrest, he admitted in an interview that “his wife never threatened him with a knife as he initially stated in the 911 call,” the release said.

A jury trial for Ramos’ case began on Oct. 14, 2024. Four days later, the jury convicted him of first-degree murder. Ramos was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday.

“This was a brutal killing,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “In the worst possible act of domestic violence, a husband fatally shot his wife in the kitchen while she was making dinner. It’s hard to fathom such a horrific act against a loved one. I’m thankful to my team, law enforcement, and the jury in this case for delivering a just verdict.”
