The bowling alley recently had to replace multiple lanes after finding additional problems from a 2003 snowstorm.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A Lakewood bowling alley is still dealing with problems, more than 20 years after a March snowstorm caused its roof to collapse.

In March 2003, Mother Nature dropped more than 2 feet of wet, heavy snow on Holiday Bowling & Billiards, at 10350 W. Colfax Ave., while damaging other businesses in the area.

“It was very wet, very heavy snow,” said owner Derrick Fossett. “The extra weight of all that snow up there finally caused the roof to collapse.”

Fossett said he had to close the bowling alley for a few weeks but that the impacts have extended years after the roof was repaired.

“We were still dealing with some of the fallout up until last year, when we put new lanes in,” he said. “When that wood gets wet, it expands and contracts, so we’ve had 20 years of snow, water that’s been expanding and contracting under there, and we had to finally replace our surface.”

The latest forecast for a similar storm has led to some anxiety inside the bowling alley, where the memory of the collapse remains fresh. Some areas in Colorado are expected to receive similar amounts of snow to the 2003 storm.

“Hopefully, most places like in Evergreen are built with pitched roofs, versus a bowling center that’s built with a flat roof,” Fossett said. “But it can be a lot of work, and it can be very stressful.”

Experts recommend clearing your gutters before the snow arrives to prevent ice jams.

Ice jams can prevent snow from being able to slide off your roof, which could lead to additional stress on the roof itself.
