BBC apologise

THE BBC apologised for showing a replay of Barnabas Varga’s shocking injury during Scotland’s defeat to Hungary.

The striker was rushed to hospital following a clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

He received lengthy medical treatment on the pitch as the BBC attempted to avoid showing a replay of the incident.

Uefa decided to show a replay of the incident so the BBC cut away to a wide angle out of respect for the stricken player.

BBC presenter Gabby Logan explained Uefa broke their own protocol by showing the replay.

She said live on air: “We were as shocked as you when they replayed that incident.

“There are protocols around this kind of thing after Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that Uefa decided to show that replay, which is why we cut away immediately to a wide angle as soon as we could.”

United in support

Hungary’s players were in celebratory mood after their win against Scotland.

However, they had Barnabas Varga on their minds, following his horror injury.

They paraded his shirt as a tribute at the final whistle.

Varga injury update

According to Fabrizio Romano, Varga’s will miss the rest of Euro 2024.

However, the positive news is that his coach Marco Rossi confirmed his life is not in danger.

Romano tweeted: “Hungary head coach Marco Rossi: “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger”. “He will undergo an operation after fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024”.

Club release Varga update

Barnabas Varga’s domestic club, Hungarian giants Ferencvaros, have taken to Twitter to inform followers that the striker is stable in a Stuttgart hospital.

Meanwhile, Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was pictured at full time wearing Vargas’ shirt as a tribute to their injured teammate.

Match stats from Stuttgart Arena

Hungary’s goal scored by Kevin Csoboth in the 100th minute of the match was the latest ever in normal time of a European Championship match (timed at 99 minutes and 32 seconds).

The Scots had just 17 shots in total at Euro 2024. Since the group stage was introduced in 1980, that is the joint-fewest by a nation in the groups along with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016.

Csoboth leads tribute to Varga

The BBC have just announced that a statement from the Hungarian camp reveals that Barnabas Varga is conscious and stable in a Stuttgart hospital.

The forward was stretchered off in the second half amid worrying scenes following a collision inside the Scotland penalty area.

The Hungarian players created a human shield around the stricken striker at the time, and were then quick to pay tribute to him following Kevin Csoboth’s goal deep into stoppage time.
