Grand County Search and Rescue used GPS to find the injured skier through their cellphone, and rescuers used a toboggan sled to carry them out of the forest.
GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — An injured backcountry skier was rescued after being caught in an avalanche on Berthoud Pass on Tuesday, said Grand County Search and Rescue.
At 3:17 p.m. Tuesday, rescue teams were dispatched to an avalanche where a skier was caught in the slide. The skier was able to remove themselves from the avalanche debris but was unable to get out of the forest after sustaining “significant injuries.”
Rescue teams used GPS to locate the skier through their cellphone. Once on scene, rescuers treated the skier for multiple injuries, including mild hypothermia. Using a rescue toboggan and rope uphaul systems, rescuers carried the skier to Highway 40.
The Grand County Search and Rescue reminded people who go into the backcountry to prioritize safety and prepare with essential gear. They said adventurers should have the skills to use equipment like a rescue beacon and a shovel and probe, which can help a stranded skier dig out or self-rescue if caught in an avalanche.
The group also suggested that people heading into the backcountry should check the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website for the latest avalanche forecasts and conditions.
