Researchers said daily users of high potency cannabis have a 5x increased odds of developing a psychotic disorder compared with a never user.
COLORADO, USA — The Colorado School of Public Health is launching a statewide awareness campaign today, “The Tea on THC“, created by HB-1317 passed in 2021. It aims to tackle the often overlooked health risks of high-concentration cannabis.
The campaign targets young and pregnant people, while equipping the public with information about the risks of using high-concentration cannabis products like shatter, dabs, and edibles.
Those risks include depression, dependency, and psychosis if you’re using high-concentration cannabis chronically, according to the Colorado School of Public Health.
Researchers said there’s still a lot of work to be done to fully understand this product, especially because THC-concentrations are so much more potent now than ever before.
For example, researchers said daily users of high potency products have a 5x increased odds of developing a psychotic disorder, compared with someone who’s never used them before.
Dean of the Colorado School of Public Health Dr. Cathy Bradley said this campaign brings awareness to these products that were otherwise believed to cause no harm. She said this is a different product than the cannabis products of the past, in some cases it’s 90% more potent than what was out there decades ago.
“Colorado was a leader in legalization of cannabis. It needs to be a leader now and going forward and understanding the harm, the benefits, what are out there? What does this product actually do?” Bradley said.
She said they’re also encouraging alternatives to high-concentration cannabis with other coping skills. You can find more information about that here.
