Shukurani Mulenda pleaded guilty in the Adams County case and was sentenced to probation. He was also required to register as a sex offender.
AURORA, Colo. — The man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young girl who was walking to a bus stop in Aurora last week was previously charged for an incident involving another young girl in 2019.
Shukurani Mulenda was formally charged Thursday in Arapahoe County with second-degree kidnapping and sexual assault on a child for an incident last Friday in Aurora.
According to an arrest affidavit from Aurora Police, he took an 11-year-old girl into an apartment bedroom, blocked the door with a dumbbell and touched her inappropriately. The girl was able to escape the apartment and find someone to help her call 911.
Mulenda is a registered sex offender, and according to court records, he was previously convicted of third-degree sexual assault in 2020 in Adams County, but he was not listed in the state’s sex offender registry because the conviction was for a misdemeanor. The registry only lists people convicted of felonies, according to a spokesman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
An arrest affidavit from the earlier case shows that Mulenda was accused of inappropriately touching a young neighbor on Nov. 3, 2019. According to the document, the victim said he tried to touch her under her shirt and tried to kiss her while inside an apartment.

She ran out, encountered her older brother and explained what happened. Around the same time, the man, identified as Mulenda, tried to leave the apartment.
According to the affidavit, Mulenda told the brother “there’s nothing going on.” The brother said he replied that because his sister was not happy, something was wrong and that he intended to call the police.
The victim later reported that Mulenda threatened to beat her up for lying about him, the affidavit says.
Mulenda was arrested in June 2020. According to court records, he pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A charge of sexual assault on a child was dismissed as part of the plea.
He was sentenced to four years’ probation; however, records show that the case has been reopened and he could be resentenced due to a probation violation.
