Marsha Cook, 54, lost consciousness after collapsing two miles up the Lower Monument Canyon Trail, according to the National Park Service.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo — A woman from Iowa died while hiking at Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction.
On June 10, just before 2:30 p.m., Colorado National Monument staff learned that 54-year-old Marsha Cook was unconscious after collapsing two miles up the Lower Monument Canyon Trail, according to a release from the National Park Service.
The release said multiple crews rushed to assess Cook, including National Park Service rangers and the Mesa County Search and Rescue team. However, despite life-saving efforts from both first responders and family members, she was pronounced dead at the scene, per the release.
Cook was originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
In the release, the National Park Service suggested that people plan to hike before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to reduce their heat exposure and avoid health risks such as heat exhaustion and heat strokes.
