Construction at the 6th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard interchange began in 2015 and will continue into 2026.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is making progress on the next phase of improvements at one of Lakewood’s busiest intersections.

CDOT said the next phase of construction at U.S. 6 and Wadsworth Boulevard includes the installation of sound walls and multi-modal connections on the southwest side of the intersection.

Contractor Kraemer North America will install noise walls along the frontage road south of U.S. 6 between Meadowlark Drive and the Wadsworth Boulevard off-ramp. The walls will be between 10 and 12 feet tall.

The noise walls will have a concrete guardrail on both sides to protect the wall from errant vehicles, CDOT said.

CDOT also plans to realign a portion of the southwest frontage road add an auxiliary lane along eastbound U.S. 6 from the Carr Street on-ramp to the Wadsworth Boulevard off-ramp.

A detached 10-foot-wide multi-use path will be added on the west side of Wadsworth Boulevard from just south of 5th Avenue to Highland Avenue north of the interchange.

CDOT said pedestrian crosswalks are scheduled to be installed with flashing beacons at five of the on- and off-ramps.

Construction of this phase, the third in the interchange project, will wrap up in early 2025.

Work on the interchange began in 2015 and will continue into 2026. The area was first assessed in 2009.

CDOT said the next project, Phase 4, will involve completing the larger undertaking to reconstruct the remaining portion at U.S. 6 and Wadsworth when work will replace the U.S. 6 bridge over Wadsworth Boulevard. The design is expected to be finalized in late 2025 with construction to begin in 2026.
