Mother-daughter nursing duo celebrates Mother’s Day together

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — Inside AdventHealth Avista’s New Life Center, women become mothers. 

Neonatal intensive care unit nurse Sharon Minichiello and labor and delivery nurse Alex Minichiello never tire of that daily miracle. 

The mother and daughter work on different sides of the New Life Center unit, but their paths often overlap. 

“We’ve had a couple deliveries together,” Alex said. “It’s always funny when I’m like ‘mom.’ And they’re like ‘wait, that’s your mom?'”

“It’s fun to have a mother-daughter team,” Sharon said. 

Neither question this path together.

“I always wanted to be a nurse, ever since I was a little girl,” Sharon said. “I was in a pretty bad car accident when I was 12 and a nurse came and helped me until the paramedics arrived. And that sealed it for me. So I’ve wanted to do that ever since then.”

“And I’ve always wanted to do it ever since I saw her doing it. I just thought she was incredible and this unit especially is incredible and all the staff here is amazing,” Alex said. “So yeah, I’ve wanted to do it my whole life, too.”

This hospital is tied deeply to both women’s lives.

“I had my third child here. And Alex had both of her babies here,” Sharon said. 

“She was the first call. Both times, yeah,” Alex said. 

So it’s only fitting that this duo would spend their Mother’s Day together.

“Helping people have babies on Mother’s Day is really cool. It’s like the ultimate Mother’s Day present for sure to get to meet their babies,” Alex said. 

Both women said they’re happy to be here, ushering new life in while treasuring the bond they’ve built strong together.

“I think I’m just so thankful that you’re my mom. And she’s the best mom in the world for so many reasons,” Alex said. 

“And she’s a great mom, she’s a great mom,” Sharon said.  

“She’s the best mom. I literally couldn’t do it without her though, for real,” Alex said. “I’m just so grateful.”
