The high country will see some snow Saturday before it picks up Sunday, while the Denver area is forecasted to see thunderstorms and snow Sunday into Monday.
DENVER — The latest round of winter weather is bringing heavy snow to the mountains, along with storms and snow to lower elevations.
9NEWS meteorologist Chris Bianchi says a cold front coming Sunday morning will bring rain and likely some thunderstorms to the Denver metro area on Sunday in the hours ahead of expected snow.
Conditions are making it likely the Denver metro area will see at least some snow accumulation Sunday night into Monday morning – mostly nighttime snow, cold temperatures, a strong surface low and good lift in the system.
Bianchi is forecasting about a 60% chance that Denver will see 2 to 6 inches.
LATEST FORECAST: A beautiful spring Saturday, but maybe snow Sunday
The National Weather Service in Boulder is forecasting 2 to 4 inches in the Denver metro area, along with anywhere from 6 to 14 inches in the high country.
There is expected to be about a six-hour window when accumulating snow could fall, which could lead to a quick accumulation of a few inches.
Most of the snow is expected to fall south on Interstate 70, which the north side not forecasted to see much accumulation.
The weather will cause a slick commute Monday morning in those southern areas.
In the mountains, moderate snow showers move in Saturday night and into Sunday morning before it picks up later Sunday. Bands of heavy snow could produce some snow squalls at higher elevations
That can cause low visibility, making travel difficult Sunday afternoon in the high country. Drivers are recommended to travel earlier Sunday before heavier snow moves in.
Tuesday and Wednesday will feature some mountain snow showers, but weather will be calmer across eastern Colorado, with another storm potentially on the way later next week.
