The heavy wet snow has caused outages mostly along the Front Range, Xcel Energy said.

COLORADO, USA — Tens of thousands of people are without power due to a snowstorm hitting Colorado, according to Xcel Energy.

Numbers on the company’s outage map indicate that number was as high as 55,600 but Andrew Holden, a spokesman for the company said their map is “overreporting” outages.

“That number is a little bit higher than what we’re experiencing out in the field,” Holder said just before noon. “We are seeing about 577 separate outage reports which is affecting 24,748 customers.”

He said those outages were mostly along the Front Range, specifically in the Boulder and Evergreen areas.

“Our technical team is working on the website and technical issues we’re having with this outage map, but you can still use it and report an electric outage at the top right of the screen,” Holder said.

In addition to online, outages can also be reported by calling 800-895-4999. The number of outages could rise with snow expected to continue for several more hours Thursday.

Holder said it is helpful for customers to report outages to make sure they’re getting an accurate representation of outages.

According to a post on its Facebook page, Xcel has about 50 crews working to restore power as quickly as possible. Holder said they’re also bringing in contract partners to get more “boots on the ground.”

“We’re gonna make sure that we keep our customer safety first and foremost, and our employees, as we restore power over the next 24 to 48 hours,” Holder said.
