Combs’ cover of the Chapman classic has dominated country radio and won him song of the year at the 2023 CMAs.
LOS ANGELES — Tracy Chapman joined country singer Luke Combs to perform a heartfelt rendition of “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
The surprise appearance was Chapman’s first performance since 2020, when she appeared on The Late Night with Seth Meyers, according to People.
Chapman, who shared the spotlight with Combs, received a standing ovation after her performance at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Combs’ cover of the 1988 hit “Fast Car” dominated country radio and won him song of the year at 2023 Country Music Awards. The cover was also nominated for best country solo performance this year.
The 33-year-old country singer’s cover made history last summer by marking the first time a song written by a Black woman has topped Billboard’s Country Airplay chart since the ranking was first put out in 1990.
“Fast Car” was the first single from Chapman’s self-titled debut album. The folk-rock album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won Chapman three Grammys at the 31st annual Grammy Awards in 1989.
Chapman said in a statement to Billboard that finding her single on the country charts 35 years after it was originally recorded was a welcome surprise.
“I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” Chapman told the outlet earlier this year. “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”
Chapman has released eight albums over the past 35 years. Her last album, “Our Bright Future,” was released in 2008.
