Independence Pass is the highest paved state highway in Colorado, according to CDOT.
PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. — A popular 32-mile mountain pass has closed for the winter.
The Colorado Department of Transportation announced Independence Pass was closed for the season on Monday. This past weekend’s winter storm dumped nearly two feet of snow in the Aspen area west of the pass, according to Aspen Snowmass.
The pass opened this year on Thursday, May 25. Independence Pass normally opens the Thursday before Memorial Day, weather permitting, and closes around Nov. 7, CDOT said.

Independence Pass is the highest paved state highway in Colorado. It crosses the Continental Divide at 12,095 feet.
