The program hopes to encourage youth participation in healthy activities and to prepare them for race day.

BOULDER, Colo. — The sound of a starting line buzzer.

That’s something organizers at the BOLDERBoulder hope a lot more kids will get to hear during this year’s race. A new program, called the BOLD SQUAD, is hoping to encourage youth participation in healthy activities.

“What we really hope is just to encourage kids to develop a healthy lifestyle, and running as one of the things they love to do,” said Alice Swanson, partnership director at the BOLDERBoulder. “And we know that if they train a little bit, they have fun doing it, they’re doing it with family and friends at the BOLDERBoulder, which in itself is a lot of fun, they’ll have a good experience.”

Originally founded in 1994, the race was formerly known as the BB Racers Club. It was implemented through elementary and middle schools throughout Colorado to encourage students to participate in after-school fitness programs and was run by coaches at those different schools.

“This year, we decided why not offer this to every participant 14 and under, and not just limited to people who are signing up to their schools,” said Swanson. “So that was what created the BOLD SQUAD was to come up with an idea that could be offered to anybody 14 and under.”

Those who register will receive:

  • $15 off regular race registration
  • Finishers Medal, given at Race Day Expo
  • Fun Run at Runners Roost, Boulder Store
  • 10-Week Training Program
  • 10-Week Training Tracker
  • Monthly Tips for Training

It’s free to register and is open to kids 14 years and younger. This year’s race will happen on May 27.

Founded in 1979, the BOLDERBoulder is one of Colorado’s biggest Memorial Day traditions. It kicks off with a 10K (6.2 mile) race through the City of Boulder and finishes up at CU Boulder’s Folsom Field.  A Memorial Day tribute follows all the festivities.
