WASHINGTON — Elon Musk’s Neuralink startup has implanted a device in a human’s brain for the first time, the tech billionaire announced on social media.
The surgery took place on Sunday and the patient is recovering well, according to Musk. He added that initial results are promising.
No other details have been released about who exactly received the brain implant or whether the device is working.
Musk also shared Monday that the startup’s first product is called “Telepathy,” which he claims will enable control of a phone or computer “just by thinking.”
“Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs,” Musk added in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal.”
In Nov. 2022, Musk said he thought the company would be able to put an implant in a human brain as part of a clinical trial in about six months. Neuralink eventually received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to begin human trials last May.
The company has faced criticism from animal rights group for their testing practices and treatment of animals.
Musk’s Neuralink is one of many groups working on linking brains to computers, efforts aimed at helping treat brain disorders, overcoming brain injuries and other applications.
The Neuralink device is about the size of a large coin and is designed to be implanted in the skull, with ultra-thin wires going directly into the brain. Musk previously said the first two applications in people would be restoring vision and helping people with little or no ability to operate their muscles rapidly use digital devices.
