KUSA was among five local news outlets nationwide to win at the 2024 duPont-Columbia University Awards.
DENVER — 9NEWS just earned its second duPont-Columbia Award.
A team led by reporter Chris Vanderveen and photojournalist Chris Hansen was among the 15 winners at the 2024 duPont-Columbia University Awards for “BURNED,” a project about the 2021 Marshall Fire in Boulder County.

This year, KUSA was one of five local news outlets nationwide to win this award, which honors “outstanding public service audio and video reporting.”
The judges said the following about their decision to recognize “BURNED” as a winner:
“In the wake of Colorado’s devastating Marshall Fire, this tech savvy local news team gathered hundreds of cell phone videos and security footage to produce a series of revealing reports, a documentary and an interactive website showing exactly how the fire started and why a warning system failed.”
A second 9NEWS team was also highlighted this year.
“Kinship Care in Colorado,” a project about Colorado’s child welfare system led by former 9NEWS reporter Darius Johnson and photojournalist Anna Hewson, was a finalist for the 2024 duPont-Columbia Awards — this is a recognition only 30 journalism projects receive each year.
