Suspect charged in shootout with police outside Windsor hotel

WINDSOR, Colo. — A man wearing a bulletproof vest climbed onto a firetruck before engaging in a shootout with police outside a Windsor hotel earlier this month, the Loveland Police Department said on Monday.

The suspect, 39-year-old Damian Jackson of Colorado Springs, faces attempted murder and other charges in connection with the shooting Jan. 9 outside the AmericInn Hotel at Interstate 25 and Highway 392.

Loveland Police said just after 4 p.m. that day, the hotel’s fire alarm was activated. When firefighters arrived, they saw a man wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a gun. Hotel staff told Windsor Police that the man with the gun was the person who had pulled the fire alarm. 

Windsor Police tried to contact the man, later identified as Jackson, but he ran to a firetruck, climbed on top and refused to come down, Loveland Police said. Shortly after that, Jackson and officers exchanged gunfire, Loveland Police said. It’s unclear who fired the first shots.

Loveland Police said Jackson surrendered and was taken into custody. No injuries were reported. 

The Loveland Police Department, which is investigating the shooting along with the 8th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team, said Jackson “was in possession of multiple firearms, ammunition, and ballistic vests.” 

He is being held at the Larimer County jail on charges of: 

• Three counts of attempted first-degree murder
• Two counts of attempted murder- extreme indifference
• Five counts of felony menacing
• Three counts of first-degree assault 
• False report – fire emergency
• Obstructing a peace officer/firefighter/EMT
• Resisting arrest
• Reckless endangerment
• Five counts of violent crime sentence enhancer

Jackson is being held on a $500,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 6.
