The Colorado mountain community has already built hundreds of affordable homes and townhomes. Next up is an affordable housing apartment complex.
SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — There’s a lot of construction going on in Colorado’s mountains west of Denver.
An affordable housing neighborhood with homes, townhomes and, now, a massive $70-million affordable apartment complex is part of the construction in Silverthorne.
“Behind me is the Smith Ranch Apartments, behind that is the Smith Ranch Neighborhood with 214 units of ownership that we just completed,” Silverthorne Town Manager Ryan Hyland said. “So, we are at the heart of workforce housing in Silverthorne.”
Due to the cost of construction, often even affordable housing can be out of reach for some people. So, Silverthorne is taking it a step further by adding 135 affordable housing apartments that will rent to people who work in Summit County.
“The history of Silverthorne is all about community and the workforce that lives here and to maintain that community,” said Hyland.
Rents will start around $1,000 for a one-bedroom unit and go up to around $2,900 for three-bedroom units.
The apartments make up a portion of 500 affordable housing units planned around Summit County in the next two years. Residents in Summit County passed initiatives back in 2006 and 2015 to slightly raise the sales tax to fund affordable housing projects.
The Smith Ranch Apartments should be finished and ready for people to move in by early 2025.
“I think Silverthorne and Summit County all the entities that are in our county are leading on workforce housing,” said Hyland.
