A honeymoon trip ended on a sour note. A couple from Johnstown came home to find someone broke into their truck and stole their stuff.
JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — A couple from Johnstown set off for a dream honeymoon in Italy, but their trip ended on a sour note when they came home to discover that someone had broken into their truck while they were away.
Dylan Searle, his wife and their baby parked at the Northern Colorado Regional Airport. The truck had tinted windows so it was hard to see inside. They had locked their truck, assuming it was safe, and headed for their trip.
“I got a notification on my phone that my truck door had been opened,” Searle said. This happened about three days before the end of the honeymoon trip.
The couple called police and an officer went to investigate. Police found the truck was broken into and thieves had stolen around $10,000 worth of tools from Searle’s truck.
As an electrician, those tools weren’t just equipment for Searle — they were his livelihood. The couple started a GoFundMe to raise money for replacement tools to help Searle get by.
“It puts food on the table [and] keeps a roof over our heads. I have a 10-month-old son who needs to eat,” Searle said.
The couple says the thieves knew what they were doing. They drilled a pilot hole into the truck’s window and cut the wires to the horn system to ensure it would not go off when they popped the lock.
Now, with the holiday season quickly approaching, Searle is warning others to be extra cautious about what they leave in their cars.
