ARLINGTON, Va. — Residents are being told to shelter in place after an attempt to serve a search warrant at a home led to an explosion in Arlington Monday night.

According to the Arlington County Police Department, officers went to a home in the 800 block of North Burlington Street to execute a search warrant, that is when the unidentified suspect fired a flare gun from inside the residence.

Police say something then triggered an explosion.

Due to police and fire department activity, people nearby are being asked to shelter in place near 9th Street North and North Burlington Street until further notice.

There is no word on why police were investigating when they attempted to serve the search warrant or the identity of the person inside the home.

Police say minor injuries have been reported but no one has needed to be taken to area hospitals. Crews continue to work to extinguish the flames.

Photos from social media show flames a smoke from miles away.

This is a developing story. More details will be added as they become available.
