DENVER — Pumpkins are so wonderful that they’re the symbols of two holidays. Many, of course, are carved for Halloween. After they serve that purpose, we leave their fates to the squirrels. They can also be added to the compost pile.

If your patio or front porch seems a bit dismal after Halloween, add more pumpkins and gourds. They can complement remaining plants such as mums, pansies, kale, dusty miller and sage. You can make a memorable autumn display with very little effort.

Pumpkins displayed outside can take temperatures down to freezing. You’ll need to cover them with sheets or bring them inside if it gets colder than 32 degrees. You’ll also need to protect them from squirrels if you’re not around.

You can also make a great autumn arrangement indoors. Use miniature pumpkins, gourds, squash and apples in a big bowl or basket. If you’re a baker, you can also use fresh pumpkins to make your own pie filling.
